Commentary on today’s R. Catholic Epistle (1Jn18-24) reading ]
On the eve of the last day, the Church brings a message of Warning of Anti-Christ. A topic many in today’s world love to speculate. Is he here? The Jewish “red heifer” being bred for new sacrifice on the Alter of the New Jerusalem Temple. All this maybe, but instead of speculating, why not listen to John’s written testimony and abide by his teaching.? After all do you not claim to be Bible Believers, your foundation and source for truth? Or just lip service to words and continue in disobedience to the word of God? Even so, hearing John’s chapter 1 today at mass, I was struck with the dismay, “how can you be “bible believers.” If you hear the “Word” and yet, cannot ACT? Not become Active in your own salvation? Are the crust of scales in your eyes, and wax in your ears so thick that a bible believer can conclude with such double think like the Mohamadens and LDS? And still believe, he is made righteous in the blood of Jesus? Is John wrong or in error, and not YOU? Or that St John’s Epistle straw too, just part of the conspiracy of apostasy in the Church? Or What is it?
(Jn1:18-24) Beware of Antichrists
Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that Antichrist come, even now there are become many Antichrists: whereby we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would no doubt have remained with us; but that they may be manifest, that they are not all of us. But you have the unction from the Holy One, and know all things. I have not written to you as to them that know not the truth, but as to them that know it: and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar, but he who deny that Jesus is the Christ? This is Antichrist, who deny the Father, and the Son. Whosoever deny the Son, the same hath not the Father. He that confess the Son, hath the Father also. As for you, let that which you have heard from the beginning, abide in you. If that abide in you, which you have heard from the beginning, you also shall abide in the Son, and in the Father. (today’s Epistle reading for Mass)
In verse 18: John is describing how he is having to “deal with the “false teachers” of his day. That are inside the Church robbing misleading the sheep and stealing the truth from them. He also takes time to warn the future generations that more like these will come. As we know even Jesus had His traitor in his midst , Judas, who it is written killed himself and is forever tormented. [hanged himself (Mt27:5) And he indeed hath possessed a field of the reward of iniquity, and being hanged, burst asunder in the midst: and all his bowels gushed out (Acts1:18) ] Is this not an example for APOSTATE Leaders?
In verse 19: “They went out from us but are not of us.” 501 years ago, the protestant reformers “went out from us” with a cascade of 95 minor demands from a local monk. Despite the man’s VOW OF OBEDIENCE the servant (slave) made demands on his King. They even looked at Luther’s demands, but the Congress of Bishops said NO! But determined to start his new religion they “went out from us” and started a new religion. Jesus’ Church after 15 centuries was broken after all, he said. Jesus he called a Liar, he said, “left his bride and his children orphans”. And of His Holy Spirit of “truth” was now just a deceiver, and a “failure,”Jesus Bride he calls WHORE. So they walked away and created something new and different. We see in the original traitor of the Christ, Judas wanting a King to lead them out of persecution of an earthly imperialism. Unsatisfied with Conquering death and sin, Jesus’ mission, he plotted his death. Likewise we see the reformers in the same light. Unsatisfied with the Mystical Body of Christ, they sought something else. After years of appeal and the reformers disobedience, the Church came through with their desire, Anathema.
Luther made a Vow of priesthood. A Solemn Oath to Jesus. Denies the Son in this Way.
Verse 20: For if they had been of us, they would no doubt have remained with us; but that they may be manifest, that they are not all of us.
Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you? You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am. If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one anther’s feet. For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also. Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him. (Institution of Holy Orders, ordained by God at the last supper)
If you have ever attended the Priestly Sacramental Initiation of Holy Orders… you understand that when his Bishop says jump, or go here or there, he is to do it. These sacred vows, as Sister Mary of Jesus (Agreda) tells us are TAKEN FAR MORE SERIOUSLY , by God than we the lay people believe. Her instructions concerning her Vows and others of the Religious. From the Master, “ Before taking his vows, the choice was his ways in his own hands; but having once bound and obliged himself, let him know that he has entirely lost his liberty and had delivered himself up to God and his Superiors.” (Book2 #444). Ultimately Luther came to attack the institution that he betrayed and the Priestly rites, knowing his damnation from his own “free will” Once to choose the Holy Orders and again when he chose to leave without permission and stole his church people with him. An act we see over and over again in the Vine of the reformed christian community to this very day.
Verse 20-21: …. but as to them that know it: and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar, but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?
He betrayed Jesus, with his broken VOWS, (as Judas did on the very nght he accepted them) and therefore he is not of Jesus, and by definition a LIAR and deceiver and became a wolf. Regardless of his personal ideals right or wrong, he knew this TRUTH. But he did not SHARE his truth with his followers. The reformer flock still believes, he was the victim. But they have bought into a lie. (PERIOD!) Thus, John explaining the cold hard facts of Holy Orders and Heresy, not ME. Also this essay is not reliving ALL the wrongs as a Priest this man in disobedience to his Bishop and Church did in defiance of his Vows. His sacrilege to the Holy Eucharist & Liturgy first among them.
Verse 24: As for you, let that which you have heard from the beginning, abide in you. If that abide in you, which you have heard from the beginning, you also shall abide in the Son, and in the Father.
As a Catholic we understand this verse that which the Apostles taught is our truth from the beginning. It could not be “sola scriptura” for the Church existed before the printing press, even before these Epistles & Gospels were written. To become passed from church to church, and written for the teaching of the Apostles very words. No matter how loud bible Christians scream about the Bible, we know it is false doctrine Sola Scriptura …because it could not BE the ONLY source for the FIRST CATHOLICS, that which DID NOT EXIST! Those Saints as then, are now still REMAIN in Our Body of Christ. So on its very face Sola Scriptura fails as a Doctrine. Luther was an Augustinian monk and receiving his Doctorate from Augustinian theology knew this, ALL OF IT.
Just as JOHN tells us in verse 21, “as to them that know it” So YOU too be NOT deceived!
Moses gave us the Law.
Jesus gave us victory over death, forgiveness of sins and the Law of Grace.
If you do not have the Son then you do not have what he graciously died to offer you. So you proceed under the law.
Make up your minds and hearts. If you believe in the scriptures but do not accept what it tells you. Even in this passage. Then you do NOT abide in Jesus and he in you. As such you are Outside the Walls. I did not put you there, John’s words put you there. YOU put yourself there in unbelief. Whosoever deny the Son, the same hath not the Father. In marriage two become One. Jesus is the bridegroom of his Church (the bride of Christ) so they are ONE! (see my essay where God follows the Jewish Law of legal Betrothal, all from scripture)
But the good news is in Book of Revelation (Rev21:17) Yes, after the entire vision of destruction in Apocalypse of John, the Church STILL STANDS with open arms to accept you. “ And the spirit and the bride say: Come. And he that hear, let him say: Come. And he that thirst, let him come: and he that will, let him take the water of life, freely.
