Way of the Cross, “Via Crucis,” “Via Dolorosa”

Vatican II Council – Adds a 15th station. Since the Passion of Christ is meaningless unless the Resurrection is kept in mind. (a) Passion, death and resurrection is the new passover, from death of sin to the life of freedom in love. The 15th station should be don before the Resurrected Christ I the tabernacle. A plenary indulgence may be gained by praying the Stations of the cross. No further prayers are required. If for some reasonable cause, the Stations are interrupted, a partial indulgence may be gained for each station. [ENCHIRIDION INDULGENTIARUM NO.63.]

Music of Via Dolorosa by Sandi Patty, the godless removed all but this; the EVIL that persist in our society is shocking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYbJINxRz6o

The basis for Scripture is the Confraternity Douay version ( This prayer takes about 30 minutes). Tradition: vs Devotion – It is , who visited the Holy Land during the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries, mention a “Via Sacra”, i.e., a settled route along which pilgrims were conducted, but there is nothing in their accounts to identify this with the Via Crucis, as we understand it, including special stopping-places with indulgences attached, and such indulgenced Stations must, after all, be considered to be the true origin of the devotion as now practiced.

Opening Prayer, UNITY (Jn17:20-26)

And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me; That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou hast given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, as we also are one: I in them, and thou in me; that they may be made perfect in one: and the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast also loved me. Father, I will that where I am, they also whom thou hast given me may be with me; that they may see my glory which thou hast given me, because thou hast loved me before the creation of the world. Just Father, the world hath not known thee; but I have known thee: and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have made known thy name to them, and will make it known; that the love wherewith thou hast loved me, may be in them, and I in them. AMEN. (Jn17:20-26).

Verse: Jesus , Lord condemned defiled , May we too be meek and mild, As we tread your holy way,. …..May we feel no bitter hatred, When we too are persecuted, Left alone to walk with You.

Priest, “We Adore You, O Christ, and we Praise You.” [genuflect] Faithful: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Priest: And Pilate said to the Jews, Behold, your king!” But they cried out, “Away with him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar. (Ps69:1-36); (Mt27:32-44); (Mk15:21-32); (Lk23:26-43) Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth. And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha. (Jn19:14-17).

KNEEL: Faithful: The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, against the Lord and against his Christ. But I am appointed king by him over Sion his holy mountain, preaching his commandment. The Lord hath said to me: Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. And now, O ye kings, understand: receive instruction, you that judge the earth. Serve ye the Lord with fear: and rejoice unto him with trembling. Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, and you perish from the just way. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they that trust in him. (Ps2:2, 7-12].

P: Let us pray, All-powerful and eternal God, for proclaiming the truth your Son, Jesus Christ, is condemned to death by crucifixion. Stir up your life in our hearts so that we might be ever faithful to all that You have told us and fear nothing more than the loss of your friendship through sin. Faithful: Amen

Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar. Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth. And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha (Jn19:14-17)..And they forced one Simon a Cyrenian who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and of Rufus, to take up his cross. Jesus Takes Up Roman Via Crucis

KNEEL : Faithful: WHO hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him: Despised, and the most abject of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with infirmity: and his look was as it were hidden and despised, whereupon we esteemed him not. (Is53:1-3)

P. Why are your clothes RED? If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you. If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember my word that I said to you: (Jn15:18-20)

VIA DOLOROSA – We ALL FALL, the Bride says Come

KNEEL > Faithful:Why then is thy apparel red, and thy garments like theirs that tread in the wine press? I have trodden the wine press alone, and of the Gentiles there is not a man with me: I have trampled on them in my indignation, and have trodden them down in my wrath, and their blood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my apparel. For the day of vengeance is in my heart, the year of my redemption is come. I looked about, and there was none to help: I sought, and there was none to give aid: and my own arm hath saved for me, and my indignation itself hath helped me. (Is63:2-5).

Let us pray, O God, to free us, from sin and weakness your Son, Jesus Christ, embraced his fearful passion and crucifixion. Strengthen us in our baptismal resolutions by which we renounced sin and Satana, so that through the passion of this life’s sufferings we might rise to a new life of joyful service free of all selfishness. And when they mocked Jesus, Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band; And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him. And planting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews. And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head. And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him (Mk27:27-31) And crucifying him, they divided his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And the inscription of his cause was written over: THE KING OF THE JEWS. (Mk15:24-26)

KNEEL> Faithful: In his sight I pour out my prayer, and before him I declare my trouble: When my spirit failed me, then thou newest my paths. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, and there was no one that would know me. Flight hath failed me: and there is no one that hath regard to my soul. I cried to thee, O Lord: I said: Thou art my hope, my portion in the land of the living. (Ps141:2-5)

Priest, Lord it was our weakness.Surely he hath borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows: and we have thought him as it were a leper, and as one struck by God and afflicted. But he was wounded for our iniquities, he was bruised for our sins: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray, every one hath turned aside into his own way: and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Is53:4-6) #7)

KNEEL>Faithful: He was offered because it was his own will, and he opened not his mouth: he shall be led as a sheep to the slaughter, and shall be dumb as a lamb before his shearer, and he shall not open his mouth. He was taken away from distress, and from judgment: who shall declare his generation? because he is cut oh out of the land of the living: for the wickedness of my people have I struck him. And he shall give the ungodly for his burial, and the rich for his death: because he hath done no iniquity, neither was there deceit in his mouth. (Is53:7-9)

Jesus meets women of Jerusalem”(Lk23:27-31)

Priest, “We Adore You, O Christ, and we Praise You.” [genuflect] Faithful: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Priest, And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us. For if in the green wood, they do these things, what shall be done in the dry? (Lk23:27-31).

How Prophetically Tragic, these Women’s children 70AD

Faithful: O all ye that pass by the way, attend, and see if there be any sorrow like to my sorrow: for he hath made a vintage of me, as the Lord spoke in the day of his fierce anger. From above he hath sent fire into my bones, and hath chastised me: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate, wasted with sorrow all the day long. The yoke of my iniquities hath watched: they are folded together in his hand, and put upon my neck: my strength is weakened: the Lord hath delivered me into a hand out of which I am not able to rise. The Lord hath taken away all my mighty men out of the midst of me: he hath called against me the time, to destroy my chosen men: the Lord hath trodden the wine press for the virgin daughter of Juda. Therefore do I weep, and my eyes run down with water: because the comforter, the relief of my soul, is far from me: my children are desolate because the enemy hath prevailed. (Lam1:12-16)

This is the day which the Lord hath made: let us be glad and rejoice therein. Lord, save me: O Lord, give good success. Blessed be he that come in the name Lord. We have blessed you out of the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he hath shone upon us. Appoint a solemn day, with shady boughs, even to the horn of the alter. Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, and I will exalt thee. I will praise thee, because thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.O praise ye the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endure for ever. (Ps118:22-28) Who shall fear thee, O king of nations? for thine is the glory: among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms there is none like unto thee. They shall all proved together to be senseless and foolish: the doctrine of their vanity is wood. (Jer.10:7-8). #9)

Your Humility, Obedience; I am left without a bitter excuse!

KNEEL>Faithful: The psalm of David before he was anointed. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? Whilst the wicked draw near against me, to eat my flesh. My enemies that trouble me, have themselves been weakened, and have fallen. If armies in camp should stand together against me, my heart shall not fear. If a battle should rise up against me, in this will I be confident (Ps26:1-3).

P: Let us pray, Lord Jesus Christ, Almighty and Eternal God, You permitted your Son to be weakened, crushed, and profaned. Help us to accept our weakness and failings. Lord have Mercy, on us.

All. Amen.

Sing Verse: Stripped and jeered by His own nation, Jesus stood in desolation, Giving all he had to give.

Jesus is stripped of his clothes” (Mt27:28,35);(Mk15:20)

Priest, “We Adore You, O Christ, and we Praise You.” … [genuflect] Faithful: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Priest, And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary. And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink. And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots. (Mt27:34-35) And they gave me gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Let their table become as a snare before them, and a recompense, and a stumbling block. Let their eyes be darkened that they see not; and their back bend thou down always Pour out thy indignation upon them: and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them. Let their habitation be made desolate: and let there be none to dwell in their tabernacles. Because they have persecuted him whom thou hast smitten; and they have added to the grief of my wounds. Add thou iniquity upon their iniquity: and let them not come into thy justice. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; and with the just let them not be written. (Ps69:21-28) I have given my body to the strikers, and my cheeks to them that plucked them: I have not turned away my face from them that rebuked me, and spit upon me. (Is50:6) #10)

Adam loses his nakedness; So Jesus is Stripped

KNEEL>Faithful: They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night. But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent. And to the needy there shall he hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth. Blessed is the man whom God correct: refuse not therefore the chastising of the lord: For he wound, and cure: he strike, and his hands shall heal (Job5:15-18); Who is there among you that fear the Lord, that hear the voice of his servant, that hath walked in darkness, and hath no light? let him hope in the name of the Lord, and lean upon his God. (Is50:10).

Our God is the God of salvation: and of the Lord, of the Lord are the issues from death. But God shall break the heads of his enemies: the hairy crown of them that walk on in their sins. The Lord said: I will turn them from Basan, I will turn them into the depth of the sea: That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thy enemies; the tongue of thy dogs be red with the same. They have seen thy goings, O God, the goings of my God: of my king who is in his sanctuary (Ps68:20-24)

P: Let us pray, Lord Jesus Christ, stripped by godless men,You stood exposed to the jeers and contempt of the people whom You loved. Clothe us with genuine love of others, so that nothing we suffer may ever fill our hearts with hatred or bitterness. Lord have Mercy on us.

All. Amen.

O my God, I shall cry by day, and thou wilt not hear: and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me. They cried to thee, and they were saved: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head. They have opened their mouths against me, as a lion ravening and roaring. I am poured out like water; and all my bones are scattered. My heart is become like wax melting in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: and thou hast brought me down into the dust of death. For many dogs have encompassed me: the council of the malignant hath besieged me. They have dug my hands and feet. They have numbered all my bones. And they have looked and stared upon me. ( Ps21:1-3, 5,7,13-17).

And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have opened your sepulchres, and shall have brought you out of your graves, O my people: And shall have put my spirit in you, and you shall live, and I shall make you rest upon your own land: and you shall know that I the Lord have spoken, and done it, saith the Lord God: (Ezk37:12-14)

And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent.

P: Let us pray, Almighty and Eternal God on the edge of sadness when all seemed lost, You restored to us the Savior we thought defeated and conquered. Help us, we beg, You, so to empty ourselves of self concern that we might see our hand in every failure and your victory in every defeat. These things we ask in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever with You in the unity of the holy Spirit.

All. Amen.

Sing Verse: Jesus, Risen, be our lover In your Food and in our brother. Lead us home to heaven with You. *C L O S I N G P R A Y E R*

All. The Athanasius Creed

Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith. Which Faith except everyone do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the Catholic Faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity. Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy {“Spirit”} Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Ghost is all One, the Glory Equal, the Majesty Co-Eternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father Uncreate, the Son Uncreate, and the Holy Ghost Uncreate. The Father Incomprehensible, the Son Incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost Incomprehensible. The Father Eternal, the Son Eternal, and the Holy Spirit Eternal and yet they are not Three Eternals but One Eternal. As also there are not Three Uncreated, nor Three Incomprehensible s, but One Uncreated, and One Incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty, and the Holy Spirit Almighty. And yet they are not Three Almighties but One Almighty. Amen.
