Hilary: God builds and protects His City

Psalm 127 {126} Nisi Dominus. Nothing can be done without God’s grace and blessing.

[1] Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. Unless the Lord keep the city, he watch in vain that keep it. [2] It is vain for you to rise before light, rise ye after you have sit, you that eat the bread of sorrow. When he shall give sleep to his beloved, [3] Behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb. [4] As arrows in the hand of the mighty, so the children of them that have been shaken. [5] Blessed is the man that hath filled the desire with them; he shall not be confounded when he shall speak to his enemies in the gate.

[2] “It is vain for you to rise before light”: That is, your early rising, your labor and worldly solicitude, will be vain, that is, will avail you nothing, without the light, grace, and blessing of God

[A treatise on Psalm 127, by Saint Hilary Bishop, Nos 7-10, 696-697]

Unless the Lord builds the House, the builders labor in vain. (Ps127:1) You are the temple of God. The spirit of God dwells in you. (Rom8:9), (1Cor3:16, 6:19; 2Cor6:16). This is the house and the Temple of God, full of His doctrine, and his power, a dwelling place holy enough to house the heart of God. It is of this that the same inspired author is speaking, in the words, “your temple is holy marvelous in its goodness. (Jn2:21) Man’s holiness, justice and self-restraint constitute God’s temple.

Such a temple must be built by God; if it were constructed by human effort, it would not last; it is not held, together by resting on merely worldly teachings, nor will it be protected by pour own vain efforts or anxious concern. We must build it and protect it in a different way. It must not have its foundation on earth or on sand that is unstable and treacherous. Its foundations must be rooted in the prophets and apostles.

It must be built from living stones (1Pet2-4) (2Cor3:3) , held together by a cornerstone; an ever increasing unity will make it grow into a perfect harmony, to the scale of Christ’s body; its beauty and charm are the adornment given to it by supernatural grace.

A house so built by God, that is, by God’s guidance, will not collapse. Through the efforts of the individual faithful this house will grow into many houses, and thus will arise the blessed and spacious City of God.

For many years now God has been watching over this City, ever on the alert. He cared for Abraham in his wanderings (Gen17:26) ; he rescued Isaac when he was about to be sacrificed (Gen22:3, Heb11:17) ; Jacob, he enriched in his time of servitude (Jer30:7); it is he who set Joseph over Egypt, after he had been sold into slavery (Gen41:54); who supported Moses against he Pharaoh; chose every peril and endowed Solomon with wisdom [3 Kgs (1 Kgs) 3:11] . He came to the aid of the prophets, he took Elijah up to heaven[Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 48:9][1 Kings 19:13, 19 ] , chose Elisha (2 Kings 2:8, 13, 14) ; fed Daniel (Dan1:8-11), and stood by and refreshed the three young men in the fiery furnace (Dan3:93) . He told Joseph through an angel, of his virginal conception, he strengthened Mary , and sent John ahead to prepare the way. He chose the Apostles and prayer for them saying to his Father: Father most Holy, protect then. While I was with them, I kept them safe by the power of your name. Finally after his passion, he promised us eternal , watchful protection, in the words: Behold, I am with you always until the end of the world.

Church founded on Rock – Icon

Such is the never failing protection given to this blessed and holy City, a City built for God, fashioned by the coming together of many, yet seen in each one of us. It is therefore the Lord who must build this city if it is to grow to its appointed size. A building just begun is not the perfect work final perfection is brought about only in the very process.

Come near to Christ, the living stone; you too– must be living stones, built up in him to form a spiritual temple. (1Pet2:5).

The City that Hilary speaks is the One Holy Catholic Church, built on the rock of Peter, founded by Jesus the Christ.

He is Not speaking of a schismatic Church or the remnant Jewish peoples. For try as they might, these can never build a House of God outside the temple that God himself ordained as a n everlasting covenant. “And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” [Matthew 16:18] For the Christ appointed his minister “And this gospel of the kingdom, shall be preached in the whole world, for a testimony to all nations, and then shall the consummation come.” [Matthew 24:14]. Others are thieves and robbers, spreading their errors in the fields of good wheat. .As in.. “Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field. But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way. [Mt13:24-25] “The husbandmen are ashamed, the vinedressers have howled for the wheat, and for the barley, because the harvest of the field is perished.” [Joel 1:11] For these all labor in Vain.[Ex20:7, (Lev26:16,20)]

Daily Indulgence: Partial indulgence (300 days) Plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, IF this devout invocation is repeated daily. (S.P. Ap., Jun7, 1917 and Mar 2, 1932).
