Indulgences became a scandal during the Protestant movement of the 16th century. The Church reformed this misuse, however the power of the keys defined as binding and loosening, remain in-force. The doctrine and practice of indulgences granted by the holy Catholic Church are embedded into the “forgiveness of sins”closely linked with the Sacrament of Penance. (see CCC#1471) To disbelieve, indulgences is unbelief in the Church’s authority to forgive sins, and authorize a just penance. Jesus Christ during his ministry categorically stated he had this authority and He delegated this authority to His Church. Failure to adhere to this doctrine is heretical in this City of opinion. Decree: Preces et Pia Opera submitted to Pontiff Pious XII. Dec. 29, 1949., dated at Rome, Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary Jan.30,1950.,-“RACCOLTA – spiritual work of mercy.”

The City of’s intent with this page is to define the forgiveness of sin, the temporal punishment due to sins. With indulgences (CCC1472-79) , and may post Early Fathers or other authoritative saints on this subject on this page. City will not debate this issue on this page. But a topic primarily assigned Outside The Walls, could be limited to indulgences, and that essay may be posted here, also.

CCC#1471 continued:temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.”81 Paul VI, apostolic constitution, Indulgentiarum doctrina, Norm 1.

CCC#1471 continued: “An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.”82 The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.83
